Antony Gormley - Another Place
60Another Place
Another place is the title of a site specific 100 part piece sculpture by artist Antony Gormley.
This work consists of 100 cast iron sculptures. Each weighing 650kilos and 189cm in height formed from 17 different cast moulds of the artist himself. You can find this work on Sefton, Crosby beach, Mersey Estuary, UK, where they are now a permanent display. The casts all specifically face towards the sea and its ever changing tides. Each sculpture has been spread out over 3km of coast and on average are 250m apart from the next, and up to 1km out towards the sea from the land. It took three weeks to place the 100 sculptures in the sands, each on a metre high base below the ground. But because of the nature of the beach it is not advisable to try and visit the furthest of sculptures due to the unstable sands, and fast incoming tides.
It is not just a sculptural piece but the start of a unique journey that has inspired and attracted so many visitors since it erected in July 2005. Part of a regeneration scheme the south Sefton development trust supported the placement of the sculptures on the coast. It had previously been displayed in Crux-haven in Germany, De Panne in Belgium and Stavanger in Norway. In November 2006 when the sculptures were expected to be moved to New York, the decision was made to make it a permanent artwork on Crosby beach, with help from the local people and authorities petitions, and support from the likes of the Arts Council.
Each visitor to the space will see something different depending on the weather, season, tidal changes and who you share the experience with, whether it be completely solitary or with others. A new aspect of the work will be the how the sea erodes and the living creatures flourish on each life-sized sculpture, so every passing day is a process of change.
